Wow--your favorite director is one whose primary work isn't in the 70's? I've never seen any other Sayles movie, but I'll be sure to follow up on your recommendations.

I see from IMDB that he's working on another children's movie, The Spiderwick Chronicles (books I've never read, but which I've heard are kind of Lemony-Snicketish).

I can't say much about children's movies then and now (I've never watched many of them), but I just wanted to comment that John Sayles is, without question, my favorite living writer/director. So many of his films have spoken to me in powerful ways and he's such an amazing storyteller. Were I forced to choose a favorite movie of all time, for quite a few years now it would be his film "Limbo" partly because of the story itself and partly because each of the three main characters eerily reminds me of myself or a person I care deeply for.

The twin themes of place and identity are almost always present in his films, which, knowing your academic and general interests, Otter, makes me think you would enjoy and be stimulated by his work. If you decide to explore his films further, I'd suggest "Matewan," "Lone Star," "Passion Fish," and "Men With Guns."
