From the late seventeenth through the mid-nineteenth centuries at the least, evangelical pietism was a major force for widespread social change. John Newton (1725-1807) and William Wilberforce (1759-1853) were among the most culturally influential representatives of this movement. "Amazing Grace" does a splendid job of conveying the heart of these men. That is precisely what rankles some of the critics who would prefer not to understand the motives that formed the main values they have inhaled and who would even more strongly prefer not to have some of their more hedonistic and selfish values challenged by those same motives.
It is interesting that today's religious left and religious right both grasp that this is a timely and important movie. I do not consider myself part of either movement--or perhaps I am a squirmingly uncomfortable and reserved part of both--but I agree that this is an important movie and a great one.
If this movie is to be saved from undeserved obscurity, it will have to be through word of mouth and that right soon. Thanks for your good words and observations, D'Otter.
