Mercer was one of the new cast. I just happen to zero in on the tall, gangly cute, arrogant, smart-alec sort who said nice things to Veronica once. Alas, and they fooled me.

I guess I'm still missing Casey from season one (Don't Drink the Kool-Aid is one of my favorite episodes).

Has Mercer been a character prior to season 3?

Oh, I forgot to mention that our local cable company seems to be having problems figuring out that CW actually is a channel, and that people watch it. There were a couple of weeks when "Gilmore Girls" either didn't come through at all or was too fuzzy for viewing. (I don't usually watch "Gilmore Girls," but Porpoise does, and so do a bunch of other people who ALL called our house to see if our reception was any better.) And then there was the night that they completely bungled (as in, no picture and no sound) the second half of a "Veronica Mars" episode. As it turns out, that was a really important half-episode: it's when Parker reacts to Mercer's cologne and Mercer initially gets arrested for the rapes. So, though we'd read re-caps, we no doubt missed some important stuff about Mercer's character. I feel like I hardly know him, so the "mustache-twirling" (to use Dormouse's description) monologue felt especially heavy-handed.

Hmm . . . I hadn't thought about further development of "The Perfect Murder" theme. It could work, though. I liked it that when the criminology prof mentions that someone wrote their paper about how to kill a sheriff, we pretty much know it's Veronica.

We'll try to catch up on seasons 1 and 2 before season 3 returns--somehow.

Huh, well, I know folks like to complain about shows when they switch seasons... I daresay for the majority of them it has to do with the long summer hiatus and dreaming all the things they want to happen vs what actually does happen. Some may have valid points. I tend to be a bit more roll-with-the-punches and take a show for where it is. I'm liking season three--the show needed some fresh characters, setting and concepts.

I've watched Veronica Mars from the beginning, so I sort of cringe when I hear about folks picking up in season three (although with the network issues its understandable). For example, the closing scene with Logan getting himself arrested so he can share a cell with Mercer is so perfectly in character for Logan both in his nature and how he was 'nurtured.' That was nice a subtle continuity suggesting that 'old Logan' hasn't gone so far into 'new Logan' that 'old Logan' won't resurface.

Mercer's monologue was cringe worthy, and I knew what the writers were trying to do... but I also think that's an overall sadness I have about the show since season two... or more to the point: it's always a character I like who ends up being the villain. *sigh* It's hard to wrap my brain around that switch in affections. It's like I have to be told or shown the character is one that I never should of liked and I feel a bit cheated in that respect. That's what messes up my emotions most. What helped was that there were two villains... I, at least, was right about one of them.

Which in a sense is a parallel to your 'rape story' comments only in a less obvious presentation.

I was terribly worried that the rapes wouldn't be real (how awful is that) or used to make some sort of point about feminists/frat-boys. While it was hastily revealed, I was glad that we know why Mercer did what he did. At least his character seemed the sort to chat to himself and have arrogant self-reflection.

It's possible that if I wanted to make large leaps in speculation, that this early season of season three has been trying to show the moral/immoral spectrum of relationships. We've had Logan/Veronica vulnerability issues, affairs, unfaithful girlfriends, and rape.

I wonder if the second half of this season will have to do with 'The Perfect Murder' project... detective vs detective??? Not that there aren't as many suspects in this case. Just as long as the Fitzpatricks leave Veronica alone (every time she ends up in that bar I cringe...yikes!).

Yeah, I watch the show for Veronica. I adore her and am oddly endeared to her short-comings, her revenge-issues and high brow morals on certain other subjects. Veronica has the honor of being the only female on TV that I like. When she was crying in the shower... *heartache*

:) Glad you're watching!
