In addition to Doctor Who, I liked his work in Casanova which is coming to BBC America, probably to be hacked and censored. *chuckles* I don't know if that's a bad thing since it's pretty out there on some levels... but, nonetheless, manages to slip into the novel category of 'love story that actually got Jillian to care.' I'll say briefly that what I like about the books are the quirky Hogwarts details that make me laugh out loud (Draco Malfoy the bouncing ferret, etc.). Plus, it's fun to go to book-release parties and midnight showings and to see so many people wearing silly hats. But I don't think they're very well written, nor am I impressed with their ethics (and this has nothing to do with the witchcraft kerfuffle, but with more mundane things like, oh, lying and cheating). Nor do the books have much mythic or epic feeling going for them (though I know Dormouse disagrees with me on this). In short, they're enjoyable fluff, but I wish they weren't so long. They don't have enough meat to sustain them. One really good fantasy series with magic as its subject that does manage to raise really interesting ethical questions (again, questions having nothing to do with magic as such) AND capture a sense of myth is Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy. They come highly recommended by Porpoise and me. And they're fun because significant portions of the books are written in footnotes. Yes, the HP 4 movie, as I may have mentioned, was my first introduction to David Tennant. Dormouse and I spent parts of the movie muttering, "Must . . . not . . . have crush on bad guy." I sort of climbed in, got comfy, played with the radio system, got bored, climbed out and now I kick the tires every once and a while if I see it around town. I have a lot of strong opinions about the series which really aren't worth mentioning. For me, Ron is the only reason why I'll be reading the last book. And Rupert's the only reason why I considered watching this last film, but even Rupert AND David Tennant wasn't enough to get me to actually go. Alas.
