Oh yeah, I forgot to explain that! K is a Ph.D. student in Byzantine art history, and her dissertation is on Byzantine representations of Mt. Sinai . . . thus we went to Istanbul (Constantinople) and Mt. Sinai! After I left from Cairo, K continued on to do some more research in Rome (at least I hope she did--last I heard from her, she was still stuck in Cairo). I would've liked to have seen Rome, too, but I couldn't bear to be away from my Porpoise and my Cherub any longer.

K was able to get a research grant to pay most of her expenses, and the grant covered some of my lodging costs, too, since we were staying together, so I couldn't pass up the chance. Plus, it's always great to travel with someone who is as interested in "sacred space" as I am.

More traveling tales (including ones about Sinai, which I haven't really mentioned yet) will follow over the next few days . . .
